Video- VMware’s Distributed Power Management (DPM) in action!

by David Davis on November 6, 2008

I just love the idea of VMware’s DPM! I mean, why not turn off the severs and save electricity when they aren’t in use? This video does an excellent job of showing that DPM works - for real. Watch and see for yourself!

Interview with David Davis and John Troyer from VMworld 2008

by David Davis on November 5, 2008

While at VMworld 2008, I was interviewed by John Troyer, VMware Communities Guru, about what was going on at the show. We discussed the “Best of VMworld” products judging that I did and the products I selected (Cisco Nexus and Vizioncore vOptimizer Pro). John and I talked about vLockstep and my updated VMware ESX Server video training series. Listen to the Podcast to hear the full interview!
By the way, John publishes all of his VMworld and other podcasts over at his VMware Talkshoe site. Visit the site to hear interviews with many other VMware experts like Andrew Kutz, Eric Seibert, and Joe Foran.

Deploying VMware Infrastucture by Daniel Conde and other VMware Experts

by David Davis on November 5, 2008

I met Daniel Conde of VMware at a book signing during VMworld 2008. He was signing his book “Deploying VMware Infrastructure”. I talked with him and read parts of the book. The book is written by him and and number of other VMware experts. I like the book because it was relatively short (85 pages) - not a 1000 page epic - and it got to the point of how to deploy VMware Infrastructure. I would characterize the book at “succinct VMware advice from VMware experts”.

If you haven’t seen it, I encourage you to take a look at Deploying VMware Infrastructure. You can buy it online at one of my favorite online bookstores - DigitalGuru (there are other choices besides that other “big online bookstore”).

In a move to Cloud computing - VMware accounces Virtual Data Center OS (VDC-OS)

by David Davis on September 15, 2008

With the start of VMware’s VMworld conference in Las Vegas this week, VMware made a huge announcement with a move toward “cloud computing”.

As you can see in the diagram above, VMware’s new product line is broken down as:

  • Application vServices guarantee the appropriate levels of availability, security and scalability to all applications independent of hardware and location.
  • Infrastructure vServices subtract, aggregate and allocate on-premise servers, storage and network for maximum infrastructure efficiency.
  • Cloud vServices federate the on-premise infrastructure with third party cloud infrastructure.
  • Management vServices allow you to proactively manage the virtual datacenter OS and the applications running on it.

A huge piece of this is the new Virtual Data Center OS, or VDC-OS, expected to be released in 2009. The real power of the VDC-OS concept is that it will allow IT Managers to easily and quickly allow applications and end user devices to “tap into the power of the virtual infrastructure”. They call this new virtual resource the “vCloud”.

You can watch a testimonial video about how companies like eBay have already been using the beta version of VMware’s new products (and have found them favorable) and you can read more about the new VDC-OS at VMware’s VDC-OS page.

Additionally, other articles about the new VDC-OS have been posted at:
