A First Look at the New VMware Server 2.0 RC1 (and How it Compares to ESXi)

by David Davis on August 22, 2008

For many years, VMware Server has been VMware’s sole FREE virtualization offering. VMware Server runs on top of the Windows or Linux operating system and is an excellent platform for server virtualization. Recently, it was announced that VMware ESXi Server will now be offered at no cost. Now, if you are looking for a powerful but free virtualization platform for your SMB (from VMware), you have a choice between VMware Server and VMware ESXi. With the release of VMware Server 2.0, there are many few features offered with VMware Server. In this article, let’s find out what VMware Server has to offer and how VMware Server compares to ESXi. How to download VMware’s free VMware Server training

by David Davis on April 23, 2008

I recently received a tip from Jason Eden, VMware’s eLearning Manager, that you can download all the VMware eLearning videos available on YouTube and Blip.tv - all in one place. That place is VMware’s eLearning download repository.

I downloaded the, roughly, 50MB ZIP file and was impressed when I ran the autorun at the quality of the video presentation. Here is what it looked like:

VMware eLearning Videos covering VMware Server 1.0

I think that it is great that VMware is offering this free and quality video training for VMware Server 1.0. I hope that they can soon offer similar training for the new VMware Server 2.0 (no pressure Jason).

While the videos are a great introduction to VMware Server, if you are looking for a much more in depth video training course covering VMware Server & Workstation, I hope you will checkout my 13+ hour VMware Server & Workstation video training series. You can watch a free demo at that link.

I want to offer special thanks to Jason Eden for pointing this free VMware Server training out to me!

VMware’s Official Free E-Learning Video sites

by David Davis on April 14, 2008

VMware has a couple of free video training sites that have been brought to my attention and I want to share both of them with all the VMwareVideos.com readers.

These videos have some good tips in them. There are about 13 videos at the YouTube site and at least that many over on Blip.tv. While these videos aren’t like a VMware ESX Server training course, theyI applaud VMware for posting these free videos and I hope to see more!

Video- How to enable High Availablity (HA) with VMware Server

by David Davis on April 14, 2008

In this video, created by InformedCIO, you are shown how to take the free VMware Server and configure High Availability (HA) with it. Essentially, what Paul Shearer demonstrates is how to use Microsoft Clustering Services (MSCS) with the free VMware Server to “fail over” a virtual guest OS to another Windows cluster node. This isn’t really automatic clustering but, with some scripting, it could be configured as such.

VMware Server & Workstation Training Videos Released!

by David Davis on March 19, 2008

Train Signal VMware Server & Workstation Video TrainingI am excited to say that my VMware Server & Workstation video training course is officially available! After creating the popular Microsoft Virtualization video series, I moved on to VMware virtualization. Because VMware has the lion share of the virtualization market, I believe that this new video will be even more popular than the Microsoft video!

To create this video training, I spent 3 months researching VMware Workstation & Server. I made every effort cover the VMware products from all aspects including designing, installing, creating virtual machines, virtual networks, storage, backups, and performance tuning. Once we covered Server & Workstation, we moved on to our VMware ESX Server overview and our bonus video, VMware ACE.
