Over at the Petri Virtualization website, I wrote about Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and how it can help you. That article went from a basic intro to VDI, all the way to the various products used to implement it, and finally, a free (yet basic) way to implement your own VDI just using RDP. I hope you will check that article out - How can VMware’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) help you?
And, because this is VMwareVideos.com, I have for your two videos covering VDI.
The first video is like one of those old time “silent movies” with some music but no explanation. Still, I liked the video because it shows you what VMware’s VDM looks like from “here’s the server” to “this is what it looks like when you connect with a desktop”.
While also a silent movie, the second video appears to be a official VMware VDI/VDM promo video that explains what it can do for you. Also, worthwhile.
For any of you who did not catch the VMWorld Virtually Famous music video winner, I hope you will take another look. The song is so catchy, I am still humming it in my head. I think I will have my CIO watch it and perhaps it will finally help him understand what virtualization can do, for real
In this video, Pat Lee from VMware is interviewed, he discusses, and demonstrates how to virtualize Mac OS X Leopard and VMware Fusion. Here is where to find it:
It is really amazing what you can do with Fusion! VMware Rocks!
If you went to VMWorld Europe 2008 or if you read news from the show, you probably heard about or watched a video from Virtualization Evangelist, Tarry Singh. If you aren’t familiar with him, Tarry runs an excellent virtualization website called Virtualization for Everyone.
Recently, interviewed David Davis, a VCP, author of Train Signal’s VMware Server & VMware ESX Server video training products, and owner of VMwareVideos.com.
I recently received a tip from Jason Eden, VMware’s eLearning Manager, that you can download all the VMware eLearning videos available on YouTube and Blip.tv - all in one place. That place is VMware’s eLearning download repository.
I downloaded the, roughly, 50MB ZIP file and was impressed when I ran the autorun at the quality of the video presentation. Here is what it looked like:
I think that it is great that VMware is offering this free and quality video training for VMware Server 1.0. I hope that they can soon offer similar training for the new VMware Server 2.0 (no pressure Jason).
While the videos are a great introduction to VMware Server, if you are looking for a much more in depth video training course covering VMware Server & Workstation, I hope you will checkout my 13+ hour VMware Server & Workstation video training series. You can watch a free demo at that link.
I want to offer special thanks to Jason Eden for pointing this free VMware Server training out to me!
I was surprised this week to find a copy of the only printed Virtualization magazine I have ever seen, in my mailbox. I received Premier Issue #1 of Virtualization Review this week. It is published by 1105 Enterprise Computing Group (ECG) - the same group that publishes Redmond Magazine (covering Microsoft products), MCPmag.com, TCPmag.com, and ENTmag.com. Virtualization Review is currenly publishled bi-monthly and they state that they plan on going monthly in August 2008. They offer an online version and a printed version of the magazine.
After reading the magazine, I wish that there were actually more sponsors (I am sure they do too) so that I could get a better idea of the 3rd party products that are out there. I wish that they had more how-to and more product reviews as well. As they say that they will cover all virtualization products, I would be concerned whether or not they can stay “impartial” as their other major publication is strictly a Microsoft-oriented magazine. I wonder how fair of a shake they will give to VMware… Time will tell.
VMware has a couple of free video training sites that have been brought to my attention and I want to share both of them with all the VMwareVideos.com readers.
These videos have some good tips in them. There are about 13 videos at the YouTube site and at least that many over on Blip.tv. While these videos aren’t like a VMware ESX Server training course, theyI applaud VMware for posting these free videos and I hope to see more!
In this video, created by InformedCIO, you are shown how to take the free VMware Server and configure High Availability (HA) with it. Essentially, what Paul Shearer demonstrates is how to use Microsoft Clustering Services (MSCS) with the free VMware Server to “fail over” a virtual guest OS to another Windows cluster node. This isn’t really automatic clustering but, with some scripting, it could be configured as such.
Over at VMware Learning they have what I call a “secret” video that they don’t promote. This 15 minute video covers how to implement, configure, and use VMware VCB. This video is hard to find so I wanted to share it with all of the VMware Video readers! Click on the video icon to check it out!
